About this card

Gengar · Fossil, what to know.

About the Gengar card

Numbered 20 of 62 in Fossil, released in October 1999, Gengar is a Rare, a Stage 2 Psychic-type carrying 80 HP.

It evolves from Haunter, so Gengar is a later-stage card that set-builders usually slot into a full evolution run rather than buy alone.

Illustrated by Keiji Kinebuchi. Kinebuchi contributed a smaller body of Wizards-era cards but is responsible for several memorable holos, with a warm, heavily textured style.

Printed on the card, the Gengar Pokédex entry reads: "Under a full moon, this Pokémon likes to mimic the shadows of people and laugh at their fright."

About Gengar in the Pokémon world

The fully evolved Gastly line via trade. Wide-grinning Ghost-Poison silhouette. One of the most beloved Pokémon designs. Fossil holo Gengar is one of the most-collected Fossil holos. PSA 10 examples have appreciated dramatically over the last three years.

What is Gengar worth?

Based on recent eBay sales, raw copies trade from $38 to $89 depending on the print and a PSA 10 runs from $613 to $2,130. The 1st Edition print is the most valuable, with a PSA 10 near $2,130. The table on this page breaks the price down by print and grade, updated 2026-06-04.

Print variants and how to spot them

Fossil shipped in 1st Edition and Unlimited, with no Shadowless print. The Edition 1 stamp under the artwork separates the scarcer 1st Edition Gengar from the Unlimited copy.

Grading and condition

On Gengar, look at the corners and the framed border first. Non-holo Rares took more handling than the chase holos, so a sharp, centered copy of Gengar in a true PSA 10 is harder to find than the print run suggests.

If you are collecting Gengar

For Gengar, check centering by eye, edge whitening on all four sides, and surface under angled light. Non-holo Rares from this era are cheap enough that a PSA 10 submission on a clean Gengar can make sense.
