Mewtwo is card 10 of 102 in Base Set, illustrated by Ken Sugimori. The artwork is iconic enough that it became the visual shorthand for the entire first Pokémon movie a few months later. Print runs followed the same three-variant pattern: 1st Edition, Shadowless, Unlimited.
For collectors, Mewtwo is a story of survivor bias. The card was widely pulled, widely loved, and widely played. Which means raw NM copies are harder to find than the print run would suggest, but PSA 9 and 10 populations are higher than the headline Base holos. That keeps prices reasonable: a 1st Edition PSA 10 Mewtwo clears mid four figures, Shadowless PSA 10 sits below that, and Unlimited PSA 10 frequently trades for under $1,500.
If you are starting a vintage graded collection, the Base Set Mewtwo is the recommendation most experienced collectors make first. The downside risk is small, the holo print is striking, and the PSA 9 to PSA 10 jump is less brutal than on Charizard or Blastoise.
