What makes a Base Set holo
The sixteen holos use the classic Wizards cosmos pattern, a field of small star-like dots behind the artwork. They are the Rare Holo tier of the set, and they shipped across all three print variants. Alakazam, Blastoise, Chansey, Charizard, Clefairy, Gyarados, Hitmonchan, Machamp, Magneton, Mewtwo, Nidoking, Ninetales, Poliwrath, Raichu, Venusaur, and Zapdos make up the run.
The grail and the chase
Charizard sits alone at the top in six figures. Blastoise and Venusaur form the chase pair in five figures, the rest of the starter-trio story. These three are the cards that define what a Base Set holo collection costs, and they carry the broadest demand from inside and outside the hobby.
The middle and the sleepers
Mewtwo, Chansey, Alakazam, Gyarados, Zapdos, and Hitmonchan form the tournament-and-nostalgia tier in mid four figures. Below them, the rest of the sixteen trade in high three to low four figures. The sleepers here are the cards that were played hard, like Hitmonchan, where PSA 10 survival is lower than the fame suggests. A common-looking holo can still have a tiny top-grade population.
Collecting the run
A full sixteen-card holo run is the canonical Base Set project. Most collectors build it in a single variant, since mixing 1st Edition, Shadowless, and Unlimited across sixteen cards changes the cost dramatically. The cheapest complete run is Unlimited; the most expensive by far is 1st Edition. Whichever you choose, surface and centering are the grade caps on every card in the set.
