The stamp check
With no Shadowless print, the core variant question reduces to the 1st Edition stamp. Look for the Edition 1 mark in a circle below the lower left of the artwork. If it is there, the card is 1st Edition. If absent, it is Unlimited. Both prints carry the drop shadow, so there is no drop-shadow comparison to run as there is on Base Set.
The No Symbol layer
On top of the stamp question sits the No Symbol error from the first print run. A No Symbol card has an empty lower-right corner where the set symbol should be, and it carries a premium over the corrected print. So a single Jungle card can be a 1st Edition No Symbol, a 1st Edition with symbol, or an Unlimited, in roughly descending order of value on the chase holos.
The premium
The 1st Edition print trades above Unlimited for the same card, and No Symbol adds a further premium on top. The biggest gaps land on Scyther, the Eeveelutions, and Snorlax. On commons the premiums shrink but remain real, and a 1st Edition No Symbol common in high grade is a genuine collectible because the first-batch population is thin.
Which to buy
Decide your goal first. For maximum scarcity and long-term value, a 1st Edition No Symbol in high grade is the target, though it is the hardest to find clean. For a reachable display copy, an Unlimited delivers the same artwork for far less. Confirm both the stamp and the corner yourself in clear photos, since either can be misread, and lean on graded copies for premium purchases.
